Cost, demand and people signals

Budget 2027 reduces the standard CGT rate from 33% to 31%. The final legislation will determine how individual transactions qualify and when the change takes effect.

Business decisions

What each signal means in the day-to-day work of a CFO or finance leader.

MARGIN

Reset the inflation trigger—not the whole plan

Headline inflation accelerated, but the pressure is uneven: energy rose sharply while food was broadly flat. A blanket cost uplift will hide where the real exposure sits.

CSO September inflation ↗
Day-to-day implicationSplit the cost forecast into energy, services, food and other inputs. Set one clear trigger for repricing, renegotiation or hedging in each exposed category.
REVENUE

Ask whether growth is volume, price or mix

Retail volume rose 4.3% annually while value rose 5.6%. The gap is a reminder that turnover growth alone can overstate underlying customer demand.

CSO retail sales ↗
Day-to-day implicationPut unit volume, average selling price and mix beside revenue in the weekly pack. Focus commercial action on the driver that is actually moving.
BUDGET

Budget 2027 tilts toward capital and innovation

The standard CGT rate is set to fall from 33% to 31%. The Budget also proposes a simpler R&D tax-credit regime, higher subcontracting limits and an extension of start-up company relief to the end of 2030.

Day-to-day implicationRe-run the net proceeds on planned disposals and revisit 2027 R&D and investment cases. Record the assumed effective date and eligibility, then confirm both against the Finance Bill before changing transaction timing.

AI for CFOs

One opportunity and one governance warning for the week ahead.

Disclosure & trust

AI labels are now an operating requirement

What happenedEU AI Act transparency rules now require certain systems to tell users when they are interacting with AI and when content has been generated or altered by it.

Why it matters to CFOsDisclosure affects customer journeys, marketing, procurement and evidence retained for assurance—not just the legal team’s policy file.

Recommended actionSample customer-facing bots and generated content this month. Confirm where labels appear, who approves exceptions and what evidence is retained.
